Essaouira
Understand the wind in Essaouira and plan the best surfing window: morning vs afternoon, seasonal patterns, and how we choose the right spot (bay vs Kaouki) for cleaner conditions.
Essaouira is famous for wind. The practical takeaway is simple: the cleanest surf is often in the morning before the breeze builds. That is why many lessons and coaching sessions start early—it maximises wave shape and reduces fatigue.
Afternoons can still be fun, especially for beginners in whitewater or for technique drills, but expectations must match reality.
Season changes water temperature, crowd levels, and how consistent the wind feels. What stays consistent is the need to plan: choose a window, choose a spot, and choose the right board volume for the day.
If you want the best decision-making, combine forecast tools with local observation: surface texture, sand blowing, and how quickly waves lose shape.
December–February sits in the cooler, often swell-rich part of the year (warmer wetsuits—often 4/3—and bigger days when Atlantic trains line up). July–August can be very windy in the afternoon, so mornings become even more important for cleaner shape in the bay.
The bay offers more protection and is the best default for lessons. Kaouki is more open: sometimes cleaner, sometimes more exposed. We choose based on wind direction, tide stage, and your level—because the best time to surf is only “best” if it is safe and productive for you.
Mornings are often cleaner. Timing + tide makes a bigger difference than chasing one “perfect” day.

When the wind is lighter, waves hold shape longer.

Many lessons start early to maximise quality and safety.

As the breeze rises, we adapt timing, drills, or spot choice.
Most often early morning, before the wind builds. Exact start times also depend on the tide.
Sometimes. Beginners can still learn in whitewater, but clean green-wave surfing is usually more likely in the morning window.
Tides shift sandbanks and currents. We time sessions for safer, more forgiving sections rather than chasing a fixed clock time.
Water texture (chop), sand blowing, and how quickly waves lose shape. Those signals often matter more than a single wind number.
Yes. Beginners can train in softer conditions; intermediates benefit most from the cleanest morning window for turns and control.
Often yes—December is usually inside Essaouira’s bigger swell season (autumn–winter). Expect cooler water (commonly a 4/3 wetsuit), real wind, and the same rule: cleaner surf is most likely early morning with tide-smart coaching in the bay (or a Sidi Kaouki day trip when forecasts line up).
You can, but afternoons are frequently very windy and chop builds fast. Many learners get smoother sessions before noon in the bay; later sessions can still work for drills if expectations match the water texture.
Often March–May and September–November balance milder air temps with still-useful swell—still plan mornings first, then read the live wind + tide signals on the beach before chasing a spot.

Timing advice is paired with board choice: the right volume makes more difference than chasing perfect glass in a windy town.
If you book morning sessions, we can store small items at the beach base during your surf window.
