What to Pack for Your Morocco Surf Trip

A complete checklist of essentials for your water sports holiday in Essaouira. Expert advice on gear and local etiquette.

Packing for a Moroccan surf trip is an art form. You need to prepare for strong sun, refreshing ocean temperatures, and a culture that values modesty. This guide will ensure you arrive in Essaouira with everything you need and nothing you don't.

Surf trip essentials

In the Water: The Essentials

Even though Essaouira is in Africa, the Atlantic is cold due to the Canary Current. A 3/2mm wetsuit is the standard "all-year" suit. If you're sensitive to cold or visiting in Jan/Feb, a 4/3mm might be more comfortable. While we provide wetsuits for all our students, bringing your own can ensure a perfect fit.

Sun Protection: Don't Underestimate the Atlantic Sun

The constant breeze (Alizés) can make the sun feel much cooler than it actually is. We recommend Zinc-based sunscreen for your face. It stays on in the water and provides a physical barrier. Don't forget a good "Rash Vest" to prevent chafing from the surfboard and the sun.

On Land: Respect and Comfort

Essaouira is a relaxed city, but it's important to respect local traditions. In the Medina, it's best to avoid very revealing clothes. Light, breathable layers are your best friend. Even in summer, the evenings can be cool because of the wind and humidity, so a light sweater or jacket is essential.

The "Must-Pack" List

  • Dry Bag: Essential for keeping your valuables sand-free at the beach.
  • Reusable Water Bottle: Help us reduce plastic waste in our beautiful bay.
  • Universal Adapter: Morocco uses Type C and E plugs (European standard).
  • Lip Balm with SPF: Salt and wind will dry your lips out fast!
