Surf in Essaouira is unlike anywhere else in Marrocos. The town's huge, sheltered bay delivers soft, forgiving ondas almost every day of the year, while the famous Alizé alisios keep the lineup uncrowded and the atmosphere laid-back. Whether you have never touched a board or you are chasing green ondas at Sidi Kaouki, this guide — written by the coaches of our Essaouira surf guide team — covers everything: spots, seasons, vento, prices and progression.

Why surf in Essaouira?

Essaouira sits on Marrocos's central Atlantic coast, about 2.5 hours from Marrakech and Agadir. The bay curves in a protective horseshoe, which does three things surfers love: it filters the biggest Atlantic swells into manageable sizes, it keeps the water sandy-bottomed and safe, and it creates a long stretch of praia where every level can find its peak. Add a UNESCO-listed medina, fresh seafood at the port and some of the most reliable vento statistics in Africa, and you understand why surf Essaouira searches keep growing every year.

  • Consistency: rideable ondas 300+ days a year in the bay.
  • Segurança: sand bottom, no reef, no shore-break monsters in the aula zone.
  • Space: kilometres of praia — no Taghazout-style crowd fights.
  • Culture: surf in the manhã, explore a working fishing port and medina in the tarde.

The Essaouira surf spots, explained

baía de Essaouira (Plage d'Essaouira)

The main praia runs from the port to the southern neighbourhoods and is where nearly all surf aulas in Essaouira take place. At low to mid maré the whitewater reforms over sandbanks, giving beginners long, slow rides. On bigger winter swells, outside banks produce rideable green ondas for intermediates. This is the heart of surf Essaouira — and the view of the medina from the lineup never gets old.

Sidi Kaouki (25 minutes south)

A wilder praia break with more power and exposure. Kaouki is the classic step-up spot once you are comfortable in Essaouira bay: punchier peaks, fewer people, and a legendary praia café scene. Our day trips run there whenever conditions line up.

Imsouane (1.5 hours south)

Home to "Cathedral" and one of the longest right-handers in Africa. Imsouane is a bucket-list day trip for improvers and longboarders — a wave that can carry you for several hundred metres on the right maré.

Surf Essaouira seasons: swell, vento and water temperature

Essaouira is nicknamed the Wind City of Africa for a reason. The Alizé (north-east vento alísio) blows strongest from April to September — which is exactly when kitesurfers take over the bay in the tarde. For pure surfing, manhãs are gold all year: offshore or glassy conditions before the vento fills in.

  • September – April: the Atlantic swell season. Consistent groundswell, ondas from knee-high to well overhead on the biggest days, water 16–19°C. Best months for progressing surfers.
  • May – August: smaller, friendlier surf in the bay (perfect for first aulas early in the day), water 18–21°C, and world-class vento in the tarde for kite and wing sessions.
  • Wetsuit: 3/2mm most of the year, 4/3mm in mid-winter. Every aula at our school includes board, leash and fato de neoprene.

How much does surf in Essaouira cost?

Essaouira remains one of the best-value surf destinations on the planet. At Escola surf Essaouira (43 Rue Moulay Ali Chrif, rated 5/5 from 105 Google reviews):

  • 2-hour group aula: 30€ — board, fato de neoprene and coach included.
  • Semi-private aula (2–3 people): 40€ per person.
  • Private 1-to-1 coaching: 50€.
  • 3-day beginner course: 120€ · 5-day course: 199€.
  • Board and fato de neoprene rental available by the hour or day if you surf independently.

Multi-day surf courses in Essaouira are where real progression happens — same coach, structured goals, and sessions timed to the best maré each day.

Your first surf day in Essaouira, step by step

  1. Meet at the school — we check the forecast together and pick your board size.
  2. Beach warm-up and safety briefing — currents, priority rules and falling safely.
  3. Dry-land practice — pop-up technique rehearsed on the sand until it clicks.
  4. Whitewater session — your coach in the water beside you, pushing timing and stance corrections in real time.
  5. Debrief — what improved, what to practise next session, and the best ventoow for tomorrow.

Most beginners catch their first unbroken whitewater rides within the first hour. By day three of a course, many are paddling to green ondas with the coach's help.

Etiquette and safety in the Essaouira lineup

The local surf culture is welcoming, but a few rules keep everyone smiling: never drop in on a surfer already riding, paddle out through the whitewater rather than the takeoff zone, hold onto your board in shorebreak, and greet people in the water — a "salam" goes a long way in Marrocos. Rip currents exist near the port rocks on big swells; stay in the flagged aula zones if you are new, and when in doubt, ask a local coach before paddling out.

Combining surf with the rest of Essaouira

One of the joys of surf Essaouira life is what happens out of the water: grilled sardines at the port stalls, sunset on the Skala ramparts, gnawa music in the medina, and camel rides along the southern praia. Common questions

01When is the best time to surf in Essaouira?▼
Beginners can surf Essaouira all year thanks to the sheltered sandy bay. The most consistent swell season runs from September to April, while summer (June to August) brings smaller ondas and stronger Alizé vento — ideal for kitesurfing and gentle beginner surf in the manhã.
02Is Essaouira good for beginner surfers?▼
Yes — Essaouira bay is one of the best beginner surf spots in Marrocos: a long sandy praia, soft whitewater, no reef and no dangerous currents in the main aula zone. Most first-time students stand up during their very first 2-hour aula.
03How much does surfing in Essaouira cost?▼
A 2-hour group surf aula with board, fato de neoprene and certified coach starts at 30€. Multi-day courses lower the per-session price: a 3-day beginner course costs 120€ and a 5-day course 199€ at Escola surf Essaouira.
04Do I need to book surf aulas in Essaouira in advance?▼
In high season (July, August and school holidays) reserva 2-3 days ahead is wise. The rest of the year, a WhatsApp message the day before is usually enough — coaches confirm the best maré and vento ventoow for your level.
