Essaouira, often called the "Windy City of Africa," is a hidden gem for surfers. While Taghazout might have the fame, Essaouira offers something unique: a perfectly sheltered bay with soft sand and consistent, gentle swells that are ideal for those just starting out.

Why Essaouira is the Perfect Classroom

Most beginners are intimidated by heavy reef breaks and aggressive crowds. In Essaouira, you'll find the opposite. The bay's horseshoe shape protects it from the strongest Atlantic currents, and the sandy bottom means you don't have to worry about sharp rocks or sea urchins.

The Best Time of Day to Surf

Timing is everything in Essaouira. Because of the famous Alizés ventos, the ocean is usually glassy and calm in the early manhã. We recommend aulas at 9:00 AM or 10:00 AM. By midday, the vento often picks up, which is great for kitesurfers but makes the water a bit "choppy" for surfers.

Essential Gear for Moroccan Waters

Even though you're in Africa, the Atlantic is refreshing! For most of the year, a 3/2mm fato de neoprene is perfect. During the winter months (December to February), you might prefer a 4/3mm. At our school, we provide high-quality equipment to ensure you stay warm and focused on the ondas.

Segurança First: Local Tips

  • Sun Protection: The Moroccan sun is deceptive. Always wear Zinc-based sunscreen.
  • Hydration: Surfing is a workout. Drink plenty of water before and after your session.
  • Respect the Medina: After your surf, wrap up and respect local customs while walking through the historical streets.
