Essaouira is rightfully known as the vento capital of Marrocos. For kitesurfers, this means a consistent playground that works virtually every day during the high season. But understanding the vento patterns is key to a successful session.

Meet the Alizés: The Trade Winds
The dominant vento in Essaouira is the North-East Trade Wind, locally known as the "Alizés." These ventos are strongest from April to October. They are reinforced by a thermal effect, meaning as the land heats up in the tarde, the vento gets stronger and more consistent.
Morning vs. Afternoon
In the manhã, the vento is often light and cross-shore. This is a great time for advanced riders to practice strapless wave riding on the reef. By 2:00 PM, the Alizés usually kick in at 20-30 knots, perfect for freeriding and big air in the bay.
The Best Spots for Every Level
The main bay of Essaouira is huge and safe. It's a "side-shore" spot, meaning the vento blows along the praia. This is vital for safety, as you'll never be blown out to sea. For wave enthusiasts, Sidi Kaouki (25km south) offers world-class ondas and even stronger vento.
Gear Recommendations
- Summer (April-Oct): Bring your 7m and 9m. The vento can be powerful!
- Winter (Nov-March): A 12m is your best friend. The vento is less consistent but we get beautiful Atlantic storms.
- Surf Boards: Essaouira is a wave paradise. Bring your directional board if you want to play in the swell.
