Essaouira is rightfully known as the ветер capital of Марокко. For kitesurfers, this means a consistent playground that works virtually every day during the high season. But understanding the ветер patterns is key to a successful session.

Meet the Alizés: The Trade Winds

The dominant ветер in Essaouira is the North-East Trade Wind, locally known as the "Alizés." These ветерs are strongest from April to October. They are reinforced by a thermal effect, meaning as the land heats up in the день, the ветер gets stronger and more consistent.

Morning vs. Afternoon

In the утро, the ветер is often light and cross-shore. This is a great time for advanced riders to practice strapless wave riding on the reef. By 2:00 PM, the Alizés usually kick in at 20-30 knots, perfect for freeriding and big air in the bay.

The Best Spots for Every Level

The main bay of Essaouira is huge and safe. It's a "side-shore" spot, meaning the ветер blows along the пляж. This is vital for safety, as you'll never be blown out to sea. For wave enthusiasts, Sidi Kaouki (25km south) offers world-class волны and even stronger ветер.

Gear Recommendations

  • Summer (April-Oct): Bring your 7m and 9m. The ветер can be powerful!
  • Winter (Nov-March): A 12m is your best friend. The ветер is less consistent but we get beautiful Atlantic storms.
  • Surf Boards: Essaouira is a wave paradise. Bring your directional board if you want to play in the swell.

Common questions

What months are best for kitesurfing in Essaouira?
April–October sees the strongest Alizés; shorter lines are common in peak summer. Winter can work with bigger kites when storms deliver ветер—check forecasts and ask a local school.
Is Essaouira bay safe for beginner kiters?
It’s one of the safer Moroccan playgrounds thanks to side-shore ветер and a huge sandy bay—but you should still learn with an IKO instructor, respect shore zones, and match kite size to the forecast.
What kite sizes should I bring?
Summer often needs smaller kites (many riders pack 7–9m). Winter frequently calls for 10–12m depending on your weight and the day’s forecast; when unsure, rent locally after checking conditions.
